The short answer: in Canada, a self-serve AI receptionist you set up yourself costs about C$99 to C$129 a month from vendors that price in Canadian dollars, or US$25 to US$150 a month from US vendors. A managed AI receptionist, built, connected and tuned for you, starts around C$999 a month on monthly billing. A human answering service runs from C$65 a month plus per-minute charges to about US$2,100 a month, and a full-time receptionist costs about C$43,680 a year in wages. Prices below come from each provider’s own page, checked October 27, 2026, before tax.

Option Published price Who does the work
Self-serve AI tool C$99–C$129/mo, or US$25–US$150/mo You set it up and keep it current
Managed AI receptionist From about C$999/mo billed monthly The provider builds and tunes it
Human answering service C$65/mo plus per-minute, up to US$2,100/mo Live agents; booking varies
Hiring a receptionist About C$43,680/yr in wages You hire, train and cover gaps

What are you actually paying for?

You’re paying for a mix of software, setup work and people’s time. That’s why the same job can cost C$99 a month or several thousand.

Self-serve AI tools. You pay for software. You write the greeting, load your answers, connect a calendar and fix it when a caller trips it up. A good fit for low call volume and owners who like to tinker.

Managed AI receptionists. You pay for the software plus the people who build it around your business: call flow, booking rules, urgent routing, integrations, testing and ongoing tuning. That labour is most of the price difference.

Human answering services. You pay for agent time, by the minute or by the call. People handle unusual calls well, but the bill grows with every minute, and many services take messages rather than booking.

Hiring a receptionist. Job Bank lists a national median wage of C$21.00 an hour for receptionists (NOC 14101): C$20.50 in Ontario, C$24.00 in British Columbia and C$20.00 in Quebec, from 2023–2024 data updated November 19, 2025 (Job Bank, seen October 27, 2026). Full time, that’s 40 hours × 52 weeks × C$21 = C$43,680 a year before CPP, EI, vacation pay and benefits, covering 40 of the week’s 168 hours. A good receptionist does far more than answer phones, so the fair comparison is the after-hours and overflow calls they can’t take.

What hidden costs should you ask about?

The sticker price is rarely the whole bill. Ask about each of these.

  • Setup fees. Ask Benny, Dialzara and Smith.ai’s human plans say there are no setup fees, and Ruby lists no fees for “activation, onboarding, setup, customization”. If a vendor charges one, get the first payment in writing.
  • Per-minute or per-call. Per-minute plans charge for every second a caller spends explaining, and some round up: RingCentral bills “in 30-second increments”. Per-call plans charge the same for a one-minute call and a nine-minute one.
  • Spam and hang-ups. Upfirst doesn’t bill “calls under 15 seconds or calls where the caller never speaks”. Dialbox doesn’t count spam-classified calls or abandoned short hang-ups. Smith.ai lets AI customers remove up to 10% of calls from each bill.
  • Going over. Overage per call or minute, a forced upgrade (Dialbox says sustained use over the allowance “requires an upgrade or Managed review”), or a cap you approve? Ask for usage alerts.
  • Contracts and notice. Smith.ai’s AI receptionist needs 30 days’ notice to cancel. Annual discounts (20% at Upfirst, 25% at Ask Benny, two months free at Dialbox) mean paying for the year upfront.
  • Integrations. Booking straight into your calendar or practice software is much of the value. Ask which systems connect today and who pays for custom work.
  • Add-ons and currency. Live transfers, extra locations and languages often sit on higher tiers. US-dollar plans move with the exchange rate, and your card may add a foreign-transaction fee.

What does a missed call cost your business?

A missed call costs the booking it would have become. Estimate it with four numbers you already know:

  1. Missed calls a week × 4.33 = missed calls a month
  2. × share that are new customers (not existing clients, suppliers or spam)
  3. × recovery rate: the share of those callers who’d book if someone answered
  4. × average value of a first booking = revenue at risk each month

To compare with a price, divide the monthly cost by your average first booking. At C$300 a booking, a C$129 tool pays for itself with one booking a month; a C$999 managed service needs four. Run your own numbers in our missed-call calculator.

Mid-job is when calls get missed. Put a number on those calls before you compare prices.

Two things make a missed call costlier than it looks:

  • Callbacks often go unanswered. Hiya’s 2026 vendor survey of 12,000+ consumers in six countries found that 88% of Canadian consumers will ignore calls from numbers they don’t recognize (Hiya, August 5, 2026, seen October 28, 2026).
  • Some ad platforms bill you for it. Google’s Local Services Ads help page says a call you miss during business hours is a charged lead if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, and a call that goes to voicemail counts as connected (Google, seen October 28, 2026). Check your own lead history.

What’s different about buying in Canada?

Three things: currency and tax, how prices must be shown, and where callers’ data goes.

Prices in CAD, plus tax. A Canadian-dollar plan won’t move with the exchange rate. Expect GST/HST, and PST or QST where it applies, on top.

Mandatory fees belong in the price. Under the Competition Act, a price that can’t be attained because of fixed obligatory fees is false or misleading, unless the extra is an amount imposed by law, such as sales tax (s. 74.01(1.1), current to September 30, 2026). The Competition Bureau’s rule of thumb: “Never promote an unattainable price” (drip pricing guidance, modified August 24, 2026). If a monthly price comes with a mandatory setup fee, or needs a year paid upfront, ask for the first payment and the yearly total.

Where the data lives. “Hosted in Canada” usually describes where recordings and transcripts are stored. The live steps (phone carrier, speech recognition, the AI model, the voice) can run elsewhere, so ask for every service in the call path and its region. In Quebec, the private-sector privacy law says that “before communicating personal information outside Québec, a person carrying on an enterprise must conduct a privacy impact assessment” (s. 17, seen October 28, 2026), and that includes the rest of Canada. If you need every step in Canada, get it in writing and priced. See how Infold handles call data and our privacy checklist.

Where does Infold fit?

Infold is a managed AI receptionist, priced in the same range as human answering services. At the time of writing:

  • C$999/month, setup included, no contract, or C$699/month, billed yearly (C$8,388 + tax), setup included.
  • Both Infold plans include 100 handled calls a month. Extra calls C$4.99 each, never more than C$499 a month without your OK.
  • A handled call is a connected call where your receptionist speaks with the caller for 15 seconds or more. Spam, robocalls, wrong numbers and quick hang-ups never count.
  • Prices in Canadian dollars, plus applicable taxes.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee. If Infold isn’t right for your business, email us within 30 days of your go-live date and we’ll refund everything you’ve paid — setup and extra calls included. One guarantee per business.

For that, we build it around your business, book into your calendar (Google Calendar, Microsoft 365, Open Dental, Shopmonkey and HubSpot connect today; other systems are connected during setup), route urgent calls by your rules, text callers and send you a morning summary. It’s hosted in Canada by default, with Canada-only processing available on custom plans. Live in 2 business days once we have access and your approvals.

The fair verdict: if you get a few calls a week and like setting things up yourself, a C$99–C$129 self-serve plan is the better buy. If most calls need a person’s judgement, a live answering service may suit you. Infold makes sense when missed calls cost more than the plan and you want it built and looked after for you. See Infold’s pricing, how it works or what sets Infold apart. If voicemail or a missed-call text might be enough, compare all five options for missed calls.

What should you ask any vendor before you sign?

Ask every vendor the same questions, in writing:

  1. What’s my total first payment, in which currency, with setup, taxes and every mandatory fee?
  2. What counts as a billable call or minute? Are spam, wrong numbers and hang-ups excluded? How are minutes rounded?
  3. What happens when I go over: overage, a forced upgrade, or a cap I approve? Will I get alerts?
  4. Is there a contract, a notice period or an annual prepayment? What’s refundable?
  5. Which of my systems does it book into today, and what costs extra to connect?
  6. Who builds the call flow, and who updates it when my hours, services or prices change?
  7. How do urgent calls, and callers who want a person, reach my team? Do transfers cost more?
  8. Does it tell callers they’re talking to an AI and that the call is recorded? Canada’s privacy commissioner says “customers must be given a choice about whether their voice is recorded” (OPC, modified October 8, 2026).
  9. Where are recordings and transcripts stored, and where does each live step run?
  10. Do I keep my number (how forwarding works), and can I export my call history if I leave?
  11. Is there a trial or money-back guarantee, and does the clock start at payment or at go-live?

Common questions

Is there a free AI receptionist?

For light use, yes. Smith.ai’s AI receptionist has a free plan with 25 calls a month, then US$3.00 a call. Upfirst offers a 14-day trial with no credit card; Ask Benny and Dialbox offer 7-day trials. Free plans suit testing, not a busy line. Checked October 27, 2026.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than an answering service?

Per call, usually. Per-call AI plans in this guide work out to US$0.83 (Upfirst Starter) to US$2.00 (Smith.ai Pro) per included call, or C$1.29 at Dialbox. Smith.ai’s human plans work out to US$7 to US$10 per included call. Managed AI costs more than self-serve because you also pay for setup and ongoing tuning.

Do AI receptionist prices include GST/HST?

Expect tax on top. Amounts imposed by law, such as sales tax, are the one exception to Canada’s rule that the advertised price must be attainable. Ask for a quote with GST/HST, PST or QST shown.
